A "Superpod" occurs when multiple orca pods in a population are in the same area at the same time. For the Southern Residents, Superpods are most common in the waters near San Juan Island in the summertime, when all three pods (J, K, and L) are gathering to forage on summer salmon runs.

Superpods are an incredible sight to see, as lots of socializing and interaction between the pods happens when they are all together. It's an exciting event for the whales as well as their human fans - so exciting that a biennial conference held each summer on San Juan Island was named after the occurrence - Superpod!

Sadly, as salmon continue to decline in the Southern Residents' range, Superpods occur less and less frequently. Now in the summer, the pods are more spread out to search for scarce schools of salmon, and the whole population doesn't come together as much as they used to.
